I don’t know that you could say “cloud computing is here to stay” because it’s not really “here” yet. I’m talking about companies that have been producing client-server applications for ten years, twenty years or more that would have to do extensive refactoring of their business applications. This isn’t like the transition we’ve made over the past few decades of VHS to DVD to Blueray, or eight-track tapes to tapes, then CDs and MP3s. Even if software developers were willing TODAY to absorb the overhead of moving to cloud computing, the logistics of getting their existing customers–especially large firms–to adopt the new platform are staggering. I’ve also seen alot of customers looking to go to cloud computing, whereas the software companies that develop their business application aren’t keeping up. We’re at least a couple of years away from knowing where any of this is going.
